Technology is an essential part of your IU Online experience. Before classes begin, make sure you have the equipment, software, and accounts needed to access coursework, attend virtual meetings, and connect with university resources.
Recommended Hardware
For the best online learning experience, IU recommends:
- A Windows 11 computer or a Mac running a current version of macOS
- At least 16 GB RAM
- 320 GB storage (or at least 120 GB SSD storage)
- A webcam and microphone
- Reliable high-speed internet access
- The ability to install and use the full Microsoft 365 desktop applications
Chromebooks and Tablets
Some students successfully use Chromebooks or tablets for portions of their coursework. However, certain courses, software applications, testing platforms, virtual meeting tools, and program-specific requirements may not be fully supported.
For maximum compatibility and flexibility, IU recommends a Windows laptop or desktop computer as your primary device.
Program-Specific Considerations
Technology needs vary by program.
- Business programs: A Windows computer is strongly recommended. Some business courses use software that may not be fully supported on macOS.
- STEM and technology-related programs: Additional processing power, storage, memory, or internet bandwidth may be beneficial.
- Nursing and health sciences programs: Additional software, testing platforms, simulation tools, or technology requirements may apply.
Before purchasing a computer, review any recommendations provided by your academic program or department.
